E-Betoonelement submitted four projects -Järve Towers, Tallinn Music and Ballet School, Kalaranna Quarter and Kindrali Houses for the Concrete Building of the Year 2022 competition organized by th Estonian Concrete Association and the Estonian Building Materials Association.

Check out the projects below:

Name of the object: Järve Towers; Järve tn 2, Tallinn
Purpose of use: apartment buildings with commercial premises
Customer: TTP AS
Architect: Arhitekt Martin Aunin
Constructor: E-Betoonelement OÜ, CES OÜ, Empius OÜ, DMT Insenerid OÜ
Builder: main contractor and performer of concrete work: TTP AS, E-Betoonelement OÜ
Supplier of concrete, concrete products and formwork: E-Betoonelement OÜ
Justification for the proposal: Järve Towers are high-rise buildings erected from the precast elements in a very special location. The buildings have 18 and 19 stories based on the thematic plan. The different heights are due to the requirements of the aircraft landing corridor, so the maximum allowed height of one tower is bigger than that of the other. The use of white light concrete emphasizes the airiness, lightness of the building and adds depth to the elements and architectural form. The balconies that are twisting upwards in a helix-like form carry the fundamental idea of the tower, which in turn is emphasized by the tower parapet solution, which further emphasizes the infinity of the towers, as if they still strive upwards to the heights. The construction of these buildings has shifted the understanding of element construction and its boundaries in Estonia.

Name of the object: Tallinn Music and Ballet School (MUBA); Pärnu mnt 59, Tallinn
Purpose of use : Educational building
Client: Riigi Kinnisvara AS
Architect: Kolm Pluss Üks OÜ, Atelier Thomas Pucher ZT GmbH
Constructor: Novarc Group AS, CES OÜ, PCC Projekt AS
Builder: general contractor and executer of concrete works: Merko Ehitus Eesti AS, E-Betoonelement OÜ
Supplier of concrete, concrete products and formwork: E-Betoonelement OÜ
Justification for the proposal: As provided by the architectural idea of the project, a special enchanted place has been created in an urban space, where buildings are arranged at the borders of the plot, so that a unique open space - “the garden of silence” - is created in the middle. The load-bearing structure of the building was carried out by E-Betoonelement. The facade of the building consists of aluminum composite plate with metal cassettes of different shades, and each window of the building is surrounded by a frame that highlights the dance and instrument playing in the building, thus reviving the urban space.

Name of the object: Kalaranna Quarter; Kalaranna tn, Tallinn (development stages I-II)
Purpose of use: apartment buildings with commercial premises
Customer: Pro Kapital Grupp AS
Architect: Mihkel Tüür and Ott Kadarik, Kadarik Tüür Arhitektid OÜ
Constructor: Inseneribüroo OÜ Estkonsult
Builder: general contractor and executer of concrete works: Nordecon AS, E-Betoonelement OÜ
Supplier of concrete, concrete products and formwork: E-Betoonelement OÜ
Justification for the proposal: These are apartment buildings are in a great location and have been build by skilfully combining concrete and other materials. In Stage I of the construction, the A, B, K and L buildings were completed. Their exteriors were created with concrete element surfaces in dark shades, which were produced as Rekli matrix surfaces, while combinations of natural stone, aluminium-composite tiles and sheet metal solutions were used as well. In Stage II of the construction, the C, D, I and J buildings were completed, where, in addition to the finishes used in Stage I, thermally treated pine wood exterior cladding and brickwork were used.

Name of the object: Kindrali Houses; Sammu Str. 5/Talli Str. 4; Sõjakooli Str. 14 and 16; Rivi Str. 6/Talli Str. 2, Tallinn.
Purpose of use: apartment buildings with commercial premises
Customer: Pro Kapital Grupp AS
Architect: Allianss Arhitektid OÜ
Constructor: AE5 OÜ
Builder: main contractor and performer of concrete work: Oma Ehitaja OÜ, E-Betoonelement OÜ
Supplier of concrete, concrete products and formwork: E-Betoonelement OÜ
Justification for the proposal: Kindrali Houses present a great example of concrete uses – a solid and bearing structural solution complemented by different external finishes of the three apartment buildings. The exterior walls of the Sammu Street apartment building have completed with black exposed concrete surface, whereas the Sõjakooli Street building’s exterior wall elements are white molded surfaces painted at the factory. The exterior wall elements of the Rivi Street apartment building are made in red tones obtained from the red pigment used, which is complemented by wood floating finish.

The winner will be announced at the Estonian Concrete Day event in March 2023.

The competition Estonian Concrete Building of the Year 2022 begins

Estonian Association of Architectural and Consulting Engineering is organizing a training on how to use the IFC model. The training will take place on 7 and 16 December 2022 from 9.30 am to 12:45 pm in Ülemiste City, ZAPP Conference Center Espoo Seminar Room, Lõõtsa 6, 2nd floor.

The training is designed for construction consultants (designers/architects, owner supervision authorities, building design experts), as well as other parties active in the construction sector and interested in the topic. Previous experience with IFC files and/or BIM models will be useful but not mandatory.

The training is conducted by Taavi Liiv.

BIM is not merely a 3D model but a form of collaboration that is supported by innovative technologies. The training does not focus on teaching how to create models. The focus is on using the models already created, starting with how designers could export models to IFC, how team members could interact with model, and ending with how to read models on the construction site from both the volume chart and smartphone views. Training will help designers better understand the needs of the builder and client and supervision consultants improve their ability to read the model. The emphasis is on showing that 20% of the model consists of a visual and 80% consists of data and workflow that we do not see at first glance! Read more about using BIM in the element manufacture HERE.

For participation, pre-registration is required until 6 December:
We recommend you to bring your personal/work laptop to participate in the training.
After completion of the training, the participants will receive an electronic certificate and 5.8 continuing education points by the Estonian Association of Civil Engineers.
Price of the training is €275 (plus VAT), for the members of the Estonian Association of Architectural and Consulting Engineering €195 (plus VAT)

CABRO, the environmental and agricultural products unit of E-Betoonelement, will start tank installation works next week at AS E-Piim Tootmine, where two new Acontank tanks will be built as part of the cleaning equipment project.

"Next week we will start the installation of two Acontank tanks in the heart of Estonia - Paide. As part of the E-Piim Tootmine cleaning equipment project, we are carrying out the installation work of the leveling tank and the floating sludge tank. In addition to the design of the tanks, the manufacture and installation of the elements, both tanks will also get a roof. What makes the construction of this sludge tank unusual is that we add full insulation to it. This ensures that even in the harshest winter weather in Estonia, the liquids stored in the tank will not freeze," upcoming works. In cooperation with our good partners Pro Kapital Grupp AS and Nordecon AS, the Stages I and II of the Kalaranna Distric apartment buildings, including commercial premises, have been completed. Eight distinctive looking apartment buildings with underground parking garages form a beautiful and complete residential complex. Just a few steps away from the buildings, you can dip your toes in the water, enjoy the sound of the wind and get carried away by your thoughts.

E-Betoonelement project manager Toomas Böttcher: "E-Betoonelement started working on the Kalaranna District in the summer of 2020. It was a very large and detailed project, where a total of eight apartment buildings with commercial premises of different looks and sizes were to be completed in Stages I and II."

"The architectural solution of the Kalaranna Disrict was created by architects Mihkel Tüür and Ott Kadarik from Kadarik Tüür Arhitektid OÜ, who gave each residential building a unique look. The architects have found a harmonized solution to unite a very diverse selection of finishes. In Stage II of the construction, the C, D, I and J buildings were completed, where, in addition to the finishes used in Stage I, thermally treated pine wood exterior cladding and brickwork were used," Toomas Böttcher describes the finished buildings.

The upper picture shows the Kalaranna District in the conceptual stage, whereas in the lower picture you can see eight apartment buildings after Stages I and II in their finished state.

"E-Betoonelement supplied the site with three-layer wall elements, shell plates, hollow panels, round and square posts, beams, as well as slab and trough type balconies," Toomas Böttcher noted.

There will be also Stage III with four residential buildings to be build in the Kalaranna District, which are currently in the planning stage.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the construction of the first concrete structure in Estonia - the Narva Bridge.

In 1822, the French military engineer colonel Antoine Raucourt de Charleville produced Roman cement by burning the clay-rich limestone around Narva, which was then used to make Estonia's first concrete for pouring the underwater pillars of the Narva Bridge. It also marks the beginning of cement and concrete manufacture in Estonia.

Reinforced concrete construction has been highly valued and preferred for several hundred years, and that for good reason. Reinforced concrete is the heart of the building, being strong, solid and load-bearing. Today, concrete is skilfully combined with several other materials - glass, wood, composite materials, etc., - giving the creators, owners and users of the building a beautiful, durable and needs-based building solution.

Reinforced concrete has proven itself as a reliable solution in prefabricated element construction, while offering a wide range of finishes, good quality and quick installation. To celebrate the 200th anniversary of concrete structure, a video on the manufacture of concrete elements was prepared in cooperation with the Estonian Concrete Association and architect Martin Aunin, which can be viewed here:

"Concrete provides architects with unlimited possibilities to play with forms and geometry," architect Martin Aunin says. Manufacture of concrete elements - E-Betoonelement OÜ Harku plant, Harju County

The Estonian Concrete Association has also organised and announced a photo contest "Spot the concrete" to celebrate the anniversary and to call people to notice concrete around us - it can be found everywhere, in almost every form. Capture your findings and send them to: https://foto.betoon.org. By sending us your photos, you can participate in the raffle and win prizes.

Let's celebrate together "Estonian concrete structure 200!"

At Consolis, we are committed to creating an accident-free work culture. We have been carrying this message and taking specific steps to create a safer work environment for many years. In addition to daily observations, dedicated meetings and reporting-metrics, the 17 companies of Consolis Group also annually hold a major event - Safety Week. During this week, various trainings, workshops and practical tasks are carried out. Based on the preferences of the Consolis companies, the various events are spread over a week or compactly gathered on one specific day.

Safety Manager at E-Betoonelement, Mihkel Anderson: "Yesterday, September 26, a safety day was held at E-Betoonelement's Harku and Tamsalu plants as part of the Consolis Safety Week. This day had many tightly planned workshops with various trainers and practitioners, where E-Betoonelement employees received useful instructions for making the everyday working environment safer, as well as general educational knowledge on how to live a healthier and happier life.

The workshops were on topics directly related to technical knowledge, such as working with a crane and lifting elements, safe work practices and spotting potential hazards. Participants also gained theoretical knowledge and practical skills in providing first aid to themselves and others. They also practiced firefighting skills, learning about the prevention of fire accidents and the best way to protect oneself and property in the event of a fire that has already broken out.

Among general educational topics, healthy nutrition was discussed; the participants were told about what to pay attention to, how to consciously draw energy from food and make the right choices by listening to the body so that the body functions and supports our healthy life in the long term. One workshop focused on physical therapy, where on the practical side, all participants received simple and good tips on how to move your body a little differently from the daily routine, so as to support the body's ability to recover, stay toned and avoid trauma. The topic of the last practical workshop was mental capacity, how to deal with emotions, anxiety and how to balance your thoughts to be satisfied and happy.

The teams also had a workshop where each of us reviewed our own role in ensuring a safe working environment. As the theme of the safety day of this Safety Week was "Don't walk by", we all have a responsibility to draw attention to dangerous situations in order to achieve an accident-free work culture. From now on, everyone has the opportunity to contribute. As an innovation, a notification system has been introduced in our plants in Harku and Tamsalu, where all employees can easily and quickly give feedback with their mobile phones. The system allows messages and images to be transmitted either about the most successful solutions, which can also be implemented in other factories, or to inform about a dangerous situation that should be addressed quickly so as to prevent accidents.

I would like to thank all the teams who actively participated in the safety day, asked questions, and successfully completed the workshops. Thank you to all the instructors who enriched our safety day with their experience and professionalism, and of course a big thank you to the organizing team, who made sure that the day went smoothly."

"In summary, the safety day broadens the horizons of all of us and is a good reminder that only if we care, contribute and take responsibility, we can make sure that our friends and colleagues are safe," said Mihkel Anderson.
