The Concrete Association of Estonia announced a competition for graduation works in the field of concrete for students of institutions of higher education.
Student prizes of the Concrete Association are set up for promoting and making studies addressing concrete and concrete construction more productive, and the winners are chosen from among graduation works in the field of concrete of Estonian institutions of higher education.
All graduation works of students of Estonian institutions of higher education are eligible.
“The Board of the Concrete Association has repeatedly discussed the topic of graduation works of students – so that future engineers would study topics that are important in practice and that Estonian concrete construction would have the necessary theoretical support with regard to the most important topics,” said Tiit Roots, Chairman of the Board of the Concrete Association of Estonia. “We hope that student prizes make future engineers think more about concrete already when they’re still in school,” Roots added.
Deadline for submission: 11 June 2018
The Estonian Concrete Association Student Prize is awarded to graduate theses corresponding to Estonian students.
The thesis must be related to the concrete or its components or concrete products, for example, the design, design, construction, etc. of concrete / concrete products / concrete structures.
The Estonian Concrete Association grants student awards starting in 2007.
For 11 years, the Concrete Association Student Awards have been handed over to students from the Estonian University of Life Sciences, Tallinn University of Technology, Tallinn Technical University and the University of Tartu.

The Estonian Concrete Association announced today at the Estonian Film Museum a competition "The Concrete Building of the Year 2017" winners.
The Concrete Building of the Year 2017 is a private residence in Viimsi.
The main prize – customer Mait Rõõmusaar.
Best Architect: Mateusz Kuo Stolarski (Tamizo Architects, Poola);
Best Constructor: Andrei Kervališvili (Nordecon Betoon OÜ);

The jury’s comment: „It’s a good example of how the customer knows what kind of building he wants and also finds the right constructors who will fulfill his ideas.”

Special Award for the outstanding architectural landscape design – Polar bear world of Tallinn Zoo – Joonas Sarapuu (Innopolis Insenerid OÜ).
The jury’s comment: „From the point of view of architecture and concrete it has an eligible place in the growing and renewing zoo. Excellent result!”
Special award for Architecture – Lutheri Ärimaja machine room – Hanno Grossschmidt (HG Arhitektuur OÜ).
The jury’s comment: „For preserving and exhibiting the historical concrete architecture. Excellent cooperation between the constructor and the customer. A reasonable compromise between the demands of heritage protection office and the needs of the new concept.”
The jury’s chairman Aadu Kana: „An excellent example of unison between old and new. The old concrete of the Luther’s factory, dates back to 1912, has been dignifiedly preserved. An important example of industrial architecture has been preserved for the future.”
Special Award for the design solution – Hans Hubert Sams – Rocca al Mare School’s open-air classroom Ateena.
The jury’s comment: „For an original idea that got an excellent architectural implementation. This open-air classroom is the outcome of good will and cooperation; it has a versatile range of applications and is visually appealing to the eye.”
The jury’s chairman Aadu Kana: „The idea of the classroom originates from the high schooler Hans Hubert Sams. His idea was fitted into the school’s existing environment by the author of the school Emil Urbel. The construction of it was carried out by the parents of schoolchildren, among whom we can find a number of well-known concrete men.”
The Concrete Building of the Year Awards which took place this year was already the eighteenth time this event had been run. The aim of the awards is to make people aware of the wider areas of application for concrete and to acknowledge those people who have used this versatile and easy-to-shape domestic building material to implement their ideas.
Nineteen projects were submitted to this year’s competition. Qualification involved concrete buildings that were delivered to the contractor in 2017, as well as any structures and procedures which were used within them.
The jury of the Concrete Building of the Year Awards 2017 included representatives from various Estonian construction associations: the Estonian Association of Architects – Kalle Vellevoog, the Estonian Concrete Association – Kalev Ramjalg, the Estonian Association of Construction Entrepreneurs – Indrek Peterson, the Estonian Association of Civil Engineers – Heiki Meos, the Estonian Association of Architectural and Consulting Engineering Companies – Andres Saar, the Association of Construction Material Producers of Estonia – Enno Rebane, Aadu Kana, the jury’s chairman, and also construction journalists – Eva Kiisler, the chief editor of construction publications in „Äripäev”, Liivi Tamm from „EhitusEST”, and Finnish architect Maritta Koivisto from „Betoni”.
The Estonian Concrete Association is a association that promotes the use of concrete as a building material for domestic use, which includes 58 companies, organizations and private individuals.
The Association of Estonian Building Materials Manufacturers is an association of construction materials manufacturing and sales companies, which comprises 62 enterprises.

Juan Bautista Frigerio studied architecture at the University of Buenos Aires (1992). In 1995, he joined New York Architectural Practice at Gabellini Associates, where he designed large retail stores. He also collaborated with Kohn Pederson Fox Architectural Bureau.
In 1998, Frigerio acquired Master's Degree in Architecture and Urban Design at Harvard University, MAUD. After completing his studies, he remained in the Boston area as a project architect at the Machado and Silvetti Associates architectural firm.
In 2001, Frigerio moved to London, joining the architectural firm Foster + Partners, where he waged extensive work on the design and documentation of the Wembley Stadium. As being Architect of the construction site his task was supervising the construction until the stadium was completed in 2006.
Frigerio participated in several successful projects: the award-winning West Kowloon Cultural Quarter (2002), the Bexley Business Academy, which was nominated for the Stirling Prize in 2004 and the Queen Alia International Airport, which won the 2006 Cityscape Architectural Review Awards in the Transportation category.
Since 2008 Juan Frigerio Foster + Partners is a partner in Latin America. He has been a pioneer in creating a number of new business opportunities in the region, enabling the company to work in Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Colombia.
Frigerio was responsible for the design and construction of El Aleph's residence, which won the RIBA International Building Prize (2012) and the responsible partner at the Banco Ciudad de Buenos Aires Corporate Headquarters, which was completed in 2015, when Buenos Aires Town Hall was completed. The Town Hall has become the architectural icon of Buenos Aires, which has won numerous awards, including the American Planning Association Sustainable Building Project (2015) and the RIBA Award of International Excellence (2016).
Frigerio is a member of the Argentine Consejo Profesional de Arquitectura (CPAU) and the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

AS E-Betoonelement’s contracting in connection with T1, the largest shopping and entertainment centre in Estonia has come to an end. Cooperation with the largest construction company in Estonia, Merko Ehitus Eesti AS commenced in August of 2015 and ended in the beginning of this year; the project was completed in three stages. Alates 1. märtsist 2018 nimetati Kaspar Ots Consolis grupi CES üksuste direktoriks. CES (Consolis Engineering Services) on Consolise tütarettevõtteid ja nende kliente teenindav projekteerimisüksus. Consolis CES üksuste direktorina vastutab Kaspar Ots edaspidi kolme CES üksuse eest - CES Polska, CES Rumeenia ja CES Eesti eest. Kaspar Ots on alates 2016. aasta oktoobrist olnud CES Eesti juhataja ja juhatuse liige.
The search for Kaspar’s successor as CES Estonia Manager will be launched in the near future. Kaspar will continue as member of the CES Estonia Management Board, and he will have his base in Tallinn, but with frequent trips to Poland, Romania and other relevant locations.
Before joining Consolis, Kaspar held numerous positions within Design, Project Management and Development in Swencn Oü, Porto Franco Oü (Estonia) and Arricano Real Estate Plc (Ukraine), just to mention a few of his previous companies. Kaspar holds a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Tallinn University of Technology and speaks Estonian, English and Russian.

At the annual meeting of the Concrete Association of Estonia, the Association recognised Peep Teder as its honorary member.
“Peep Teder has been in charge of translating standards associated with concrete and many other standards adopted in Estonia of restored independence from the very beginning, for more than 20 years. The majority of standards associated with the entire area of construction materials have been translated into Estonian with the help of Peep Teder,” said Tiit Roots, Chairman of the Board of the Concrete Association of Estonia. “We are very happy about this long-term productive cooperation,” Roots added.
According to the Statutes of Honorary Member of the Concrete Association of Estonia, “being elected as an honorary member is a special tribute to those people who have done great things upon the performance of the goals of the Concrete Association of Estonia. An honorary member is elected by the board of the Concrete Association of Estonia based on a consensus.”
The majority of standards associated with concrete – concrete mixture, concrete elements, pavement stones, fibre reinforced concrete –, in total 60 standards, have been translated into Estonian as the work of Peep Teder, the new honorary member of the Concrete Association of Estonia. New and updated versions have already been published of many of them.
Peep Teder has also translated other standards associated with concrete – aggregates, concrete masonry bricks, concrete roof tiles, mortars, dry mixtures, etc.
Peep Teder (born April 23, 1934) graduated from Tallinn Secondary School No. 2 (1952), Civil Engineer at the Tallinn Polytechnic Institute (1958). Candidate of Engineering (1965). He studied the technology of asphalt concrete, silicate stone and concrete (TUI Construction: 1957-67; 1973-80, STUPRI: 1967-73), worked as a senior lecturer and head of the chair at the Tallinn University of Technology in the field of graphic arts (1980-1992), in the Building TEST Center (1992-2002) Deputy Director
Peep Teder has been a successful basketball player.
He won the USSR 1952 youth championship silver medal and 1951 bronze trophy. He became a student master of the USSR in the 1955 TPI team and became an Estonian champion in 1953-55 in the Tallinn Kalev team (1956 - silver and 1957 - bronze). He played in the 1953-59 in Estonian squad. Master Sportsman (1959).
At an older age, have been actively involved in the promotion of senior basketball.
Peep Teder is the Honorary Member of the Estonian Concrete Association. In 2010, honorary status was awarded to Aadu Kana, Toomas Laur in 2012, Vello Otsmaa in 2014, Arvo Tinn in 2015.

19 buildings were submitted to the competition "Concrete construction of the year 2017" organized by the Estonian Concrete Association and the Estonian Building Materials Manufacturers Association.
Concrete as the most widely used domestic building material has been widely used in the last year, "said Tiit Roots, Chairman of the Board of the Estonian Concrete Company. "There are a lot of outstanding buildings and facilities where concrete plays an important role," Roots added.
The board of the Estonian Concrete Association confirmed all 19 constructions that were nominated for the "Concrete Building of the Year 2017" competition.
"Concrete building of the year 2017" candidates for the title: industrial, commercial, agricultural and office buildings, private houses, apartment buildings, health centers, "said Toomas Vainola, Executive Director of Estonian Concrete Association. "But also a modern museum and zoo, a nursing home, a tram system with a tunnel, a school classroom, a renovated old concrete building."
According to Vainola, the nominees display quite a lot of multiplicity of opportunities of today's Estonian construction market.

The aim of the competition is to find and highlight the buildings, whose appearance and effective and economical performance demonstrate the advantages and potential of concrete as a domestic material.
The object or procedure wins, where a significant contribution has been made to the work of registered traders in Estonia and concrete materials delivered from Estonia. When choosing a winning work, it is also taken into account the professionalism and the level of competence, quality and innovation of the design and construction of the object.
The main prize belongs to the author of the work. Special marking for winning object´s customer, designer, builder, concrete and formwork supplier.
The jury of the competition for the eighteenth time will be represented by representatives of the Estonian Association of Architects, the Estonian Concrete Association, the Estonian Construction Entrepreneurs Association, the Estonian Association of Civil Engineers, the Association of Estonian Construction Consultancy Companies, the Estonian Building Materials Manufacturers Association, the Kunda NordicTsemendi and the construction journalists.
The jury will start its work in January.
The winner will be announced on the Concrete Day on March 14, 2018.
