The wolf sculpture given as a gift to the city and the Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) earned a special prize to E-Betoonelement at the competition of the best concrete building.
E-Betoonelement nominated the PÖFF wolf to the competition “Concrete Building of the Year 2009” to promote the use of concrete more widely and show that, independently, concrete is a beautiful material for creating a better living environment.

The jury found that even though the competition rules do not allow a concrete wolf wailing towards the moon to win the title of the concrete building of the year, because it is not a building, the wolf was nevertheless their big favourite. The wolf statue was also the first sculpture among the nominees throughout the ten-year history of the competition and, if we exclude street barriers, the first concrete sculpture altogether. The jury decided unanimously that concrete sculptures are an interesting challenge for concrete manufacturers and there should be more of such statues in Estonia. Therefore, the concrete wolf was awarded a special prize for its tasteful outlook and flawless realisation.

In addition to the wolf sculpture of PÖFF, the jury highlighted elements delivered by E-Betoonelement for the production, warehouse and office building of Otto Bock Estonia AS which won the architect’s special prize at the competition “Concrete Building of the Year 2009”.

The opinion of the jury: The objective of the architect has been to value the simple production building with strongly articulated external finishing, using interesting sculptured and smooth concrete elements. This is a sympathetic architectural aspiration and everything that the architect aspired for has been nicely put into practice in the case of this building. The result is a fine-looking house without excessive elements. The most exciting part of the building is its element surface resembling a barcode which has been achieved by means of rubber form liners.

The opinion of the jury: The office building of Tallink clearly stood out from the other nominees and received the first place with the majority of votes. The best aspects of the building are its decorative concrete crosses – the crosses’ surface that is of high quality and has no defects or cracks leaves no doubt that their preparation and assembly has required a great amount of work. The beautiful and striking staircase demonstrates clean concrete surface in interior design.

The opinion of the jury: The work of the architect deserves to be highlighted the most. The architect had to manage the integration of historic wall parts into the building and their appropriate exposition, whereas they comprise a quarter of the surface of the whole structure. This is an honest and very concrete-like building in every way, and all concrete works have been carried out with excellent quality.
