Press release of AS E-Betoonelement

AS E-Betoonelement completed assembly of the facade of the new building of the University of Tartu Narva College. Now it is possible for everyone to explore the exclusive elements next to the Town Hall.

As the winners of the architectural competition were announced the architects Katrin Koov, Indrek Peil, Heidi Urb and Siiri Vallner from Kavakava OÜ. The new building of the College was designed to replace the stock exchange building that was destroyed during the war. The main objective of the architectural solution is that the capacity of the historical stock exchange building would obtain clear outlines in the environment of the Town Hall square. The capacity of the destroyed stock exchange building is seen as a negative cast on the facade of the new building. The solution includes at the same time the absence of the old town and also it’s rebuilding.

The Manager of AS E-Betoonelement Vaido Leosk: “The design of the facade elements considered the vision of the architects and to achieve the best result we have prepared several samples and test castings. The elements have relatively complicated shapes and required careful casting of concrete, careful transportation and skillful assembly. I’m excited to see the final completion of the project.”

“Taking a glance at the facade drawings, it was clear that this kind of project represents a real challenge for skills of our workers, and also for technical and organizational capability. At the same time I got a feeling that concrete is the only appropriate material to realize this ambition the old materials could not be applied and plastic Hollywood type cliché could not be considered for architectural reasons. All used components complicated moulds, white concrete, reversible elements, no access because of the cellars next to the building were known for us, but there were never all such complicated circumstances in the same project.

For architectural reasons the facade has been divided into two parts: the architect wanted to see cast-in-place concrete on the ground level (performed by YIT), but on the higher floors it would have been problematic to assemble a formwork,” Tõnu Ernits, Sales Project Manager.

AS E-Betoonelement provided design, manufacturing, delivery and assembly of the facade elements. The main contractor of the new building of the University of Tartu Narva College is YIT Ehituse AS. The building is to be completed this summer.

AS E-Betoonelement belongs to Consolis SAS, the largest manufacturer of prefabricated concrete elements in Europe, that has over 130 plants in 25 countries.

The facade of the new study building at the University of Tartu, Narva College, is ready and there is an impression of a rising house in the border town, students and staff can move in late August.

Arhitektide Katrin Koovi, Indrek Peili ja Siiri Vallneri projekteeritud hoonel Narva raekoja platsil on esisein, mis meenutab kunagi Raekoja ees seisnud börsihoone kipsist valuvormi. Valged betoonpaneelid valmisid aktsiaseltsi E-Betoonelement Harku tehases.

Osa fassaadi tehakse siin Betoonelemendis, osa kohapeal," rääkis E-Betoonelemendi arendusjuht Andres Aas.

The white cement produced in Denmark has been used for making concrete and white aggregate from Finland has been used as a filler.

"Narva vanalinn rikuti ära 1944. aasta 6. märtsil, nii et rikkuda pole siin enam suurt midagi. Küll aga on minulegi, kes ma arhitektuurist suurt midagi ei tea, selge, et meie uus hoone ja Narva raekoda ja hoone vastas asuv hruštšovka moodustavad ühe terviku ja annavad aimu, kus oli Raekoja plats ja mida annaks teha, et Narva ajalugu veel taaselustada," sõnas Raik.

Despite the many controversy, Narva has taken over the new building. There have already been urban proxies. One of them argues that during the war, the Estonian government will move to the college, or the cellar of the former stock exchange building.

Järgmisel kolmapäeval, 14. märtsil 2012, toimub Betoonipäev, mille raames kuulutatakse välja konkursi "Aasta betoonehitis 2011" võitjad. Tallinna Tehnikaülikoolis toimuval üritusel on peaesinejaks tunnustatud Soome arhitekt Mikko Heikkinen.

E-Betoonelement AS submitted Helme St. apartment blocks with an external façade made of graphic concrete that was manufactured according to the new technology to the Concrete Building of the Year 2011 competition.

The apartment blocks have been built from mountable reinforced concrete panels that carry vertical log patterns made as negative images. Exterior wall panels are covered with azure color to make concrete as a material stand out better. The façade panels are eye-catching and unique in Northern Estonia. The architect has finished the apartment block’s front façade with graphic concrete pattern that depicts images inspired by the surrounding nature: reeds and water. The new technological method of creating large-scale images of graphic concrete was created in close collaboration of architect, developer, and manufacturer. The use of graphic concrete has so far been limited to the size and repeating of images of screen printing technology.
