Newspaper Teeleht No. 3-4 (63,64) December 2010

Newspaper Teeleht No. 3-4 (63,64) December 2010 The Soodla Bridge is located on the side road No 11105 in the Harju county, Anija rural municipality, on the Kiiu-Soodla road at Soodla river, km 9,122. The old bridge was built in 1953 as a monolithic reinforced concrete beam-bridge.
During the renovation it was planned to bring the bridge gauge to 8.7 meters. The entire superstructure of the bridge was removed.
In the preliminary project, the deck was designed from monolithic concrete. For three main reasons, the general contractor decided to build the deck for a partially assembled composite structure.
Metal beams supplied by OÜ Monik, prefabricated reinforced concrete deckplates were designed by AS E-Betoonelemendi, Merko Ehituse AS and OÜ EstKONSULT cooperation.
The construction of the deck structure remained in the winter, making the use of the prefabricated reinforced concrete element solution to allow the plate casting to be moved to the factory interior.
Preparatory work was started on the site in January 2010. Monolithic steel casting formwork was installed on April 19.
Reinforced concrete deckplates were manufactured in the Tamsalu factory by AS E-Betoonelement within one month.
In the case of finishing, the smooth surface of the mold remained flat from the bottom of the deck plates.
The significance of this project was the precision of the dimensions of deck panel elements, where tile tolerance was strictly controlled.
It is good to have a realistic project confirming that it is possible to make large-sized and precisely demanding elements for infrastructure facilities in the prefabricated reinforced concrete.

Kairet Luiga
Infrastructure products manager of AS E-Betoonelement

COMMENTS
Vello Vares, AS Merko Ehitus Site Manager:
"The advantage of a assembled deck should be clearly highlighted in the event that the need for work under the bridge is completely eliminated.

Sirje Pilt, OÜ Langeproon Inseneriehitus CEO:
"Hydraulically isolated bridge deck was used by the cold-assembled system Servidek / Servipak GRACE Construction Products Ltd. (Road Technical Specification System No. 3). One of the advantages of this system is speed. It is not necessary to wait for 28 days for monolithic hardening.

Thirteen nominations were submitted to the competition “Concrete Building of the Year 2010” organised by the Concrete Association of Estonia (CAE) and the Association of Construction Material Producers of Estonia (ACMPE).

“This year’s competition of concrete buildings has been the least Tallinn-centred throughout the competition’s history,” said Mati Laurson, the Chairman of the Management Board of the CAE. “Our competition quite adequately reflects changes that have taken place in the construction market lately – the proportion of infrastructure objects and buildings financed by the state has grown,” Laurson added.

The Concrete Building of the Year 2010 nominees are the following:
1. Outdoor areas of the Estonian Road Museum – Varbuse, Kanepi Rural Municipality, Põlvamaa;
2. Residential building in Keila-Joa, Näkineiu tee 9 – Keila Rural Municipality, Harjumaa;
3. Residential building in Nõmme (Black house), Valguse tn 17 – Tallinn;
4. Residential building in Pirita, Vahtramäe tee 9 – Tallinn;
5. Office building of Jewe – Jõhvi;
6. Jõhvi Court House – Jõhvi;
7. Kersti Võlu’s Training Centre – Jõhvi;
8. Mäo traffic junction (Tarbija flyover, Mäo flyover, Vodja bridge, Valgma flyover, Valgma defence caisson, flyover of Mäo centre) – Järvamaa;

13. Business building, Ülikooli 2/2B – Tartu.

The purpose of the competition is to find and highlight buildings, the nice appearance and effective and economic realisation of which demonstrate the advantages and possibilities of concrete as a domestic material. Winning objects or procedures are those where the work of enterprises registered in Estonia and concrete materials delivered from Estonia have played an important role. Likewise, the professionalism and level of pretentiousness of the technical design and construction of the object, as well as its quality and innovativeness will be taken into consideration when choosing the winning object. The grand prize will be awarded to the author of the winning idea – the architect. The contracting entity of the object, technical designer, builder, and supplier of concrete products will also be recognised.

The jury of the competition held for the 11th time will include representatives of the Union of Estonian Architects, the Concrete Association of Estonia, the Estonian Association of Civil Engineers, the Estonian Association of Construction Entrepreneurs, the Association of Construction Material Producers of Estonia, the Estonian Association of Architectural and Consulting Engineering Companies, Kunda Nordic Cement, and construction journalism.

“The jury will start acquainting itself with the nominees,” said Peeter Kokk, the Chief Executive of the CAE.

The winner will be announced at the 11th Concrete Day in March 2011.

Composed based on the press release of 13 December from the Concrete Association of Estonia and the Association of Construction Material Producers of Estonia.

Tea Taruste, Äripäev

The turnover of the producers of building materials increased by 7% in nine months in comparison with the past year. Enno Rebane, the Head of the Estonian Association of Building Material Producers, said that a surprise was served by the producers of concrete elements who have turned their production into a good export article.

"Käesolev aasta on summaarselt kulgenud suhteliselt sarnasena eelmise aastaga. Õige pisuke pluss on küll positiivne, kuid tuleneb tervikuna ekspordi kasvust," sõnas Rebane. Siseturg on paraku endiselt miinuses, vaatamata eelmise aasta kui baasi väga madalale tasemele.

In nine months, the sales turnover of the companies belonging to the Estonian Association of Building Material Producers has increased by 7%, i.e. to EEK 3,978 million, in comparison with the same period last year.

Fresh concrete, paving stones, thermal insulation, wall and roof materials have been sold approximately in the same amount as last year. According to Rebane, the sale of crushed stone and sand are in the worst state.

"Üha enam avaldab mõju maanteeameti deklaratiivne kohustus kasutada tee-ehituses paljudes kohtades paekivikillustiku asemel tardkivimkillustikku.

The rise in turnover is characteristic of the sale of building foams, plastic tubes and wooden windows.

During nine months in 2010, building materials were exported in the volume of EEK 1,899 million, which is approximately EEK 400 million more than during the same period in 2009. OÜ Krimelte, a producer of building foams, has the biggest export turnover.

Besides OÜ Krimelte, more than three quarters of the sales volume of building materials is exported by AS Tartu Maja Betoontooted and producers of opening fillings AS Saku Metall, AS Metus-Est and AS Fenestra; more than half of the turnover has been exported by the producer of limestone products AS Nordkalk, the producer of wall materials AS Aeroc, the producer of plastic tubes OÜ Haka Plast, the producer of roof products OÜ Monier, the producer of concrete additives OÜ Remei Baltica, and the producers of opening fillings AS Viking Window, AS Saajos and OÜ T-Tammer.

Turnovers of companies in 9 months in 2010 (in millions of kroons)
1. Krimelte OÜ 761
2. AS Saint-Gobain Ehitustooted   231
3. AS Pipelife Eesti 222
4. AS E-Betoonelement 218
5. AS Rudus 193
6. AS Nordkalk 167
7. AS Saku Metall 157

Among Estonian entrepreneurs, the protection of ideas is not particularly widespread as a patent or utility model; in addition, there is not enough knowledge and skills to invent something new. "The idea behind the patent is to create a new value and you do not always have to invent a bike, sometimes ...

The company receives protection against copying
ASi E-Betoonelement tehaste laborijuhi Aare Lessuki sõnul on leiutise kasuliku mudelina kaitsmise peapõhjus konkurentsieelis. "See kaitseb kopeerimise vastu ja konkurendid ei saa nii lihtsalt täpselt samasugust asja teha," selgitas ta.
Protected ideas from E-Betoonelement have been developed by company engineers and have not been collaborated with research organizations, but in some cases it may be necessary, he added.

According to Lessuk,
E-Betoonelement was not thinking about selling and benefiting from protected ideas, but the invention is used only internally.
Ehitusfirma ASi Amhold juhi Arvu Mägi sõnul on masstootmisega tegeleval ettevõttel hädavajalik kaitsta enda loodud lahendusi. "Samas on oluline, et tootmise puhul ollakse kindlad, et ei ole rikutud ka teiste patendivaldajate õigusi, mis võib kaasa tuua katastroofilised tagajärjed," selgitas ta.

The invention keeps the spirit alive

In recent years, activity has risen
In Estonia, the process of applying for the protection of intellectual property is normally organized, but it is unreasonably long-term.
Läänmäe sõnul on leiutiste kaitsmise vajalikkust hakatud ettevõtjatele aktiivselt selgitama alles viimasel paaril aastal. "Selle perioodi jooksul on märgata patentide ja kasulike mudelite taotluste arvu märgatavat kasvu," rääkis ta.

STEP BY STEP
1. Creating an idea of value for a business is based on three skills:
- eduka idee ehk lähtealuse äratundmise oskus toote või teenuse edasiarendamisel (informatsiooniga töötamine ja analüüsimine)
- tööstusomandi dokumentide lugemise oskus
- probleemide lahendamise oskuse ehk kuidas leiutada nii, et leiutis tooks kasu
2. The ability of an innovative idea or new product to make a profit. If you do a new way of things, you might find something better than your original goal.
4. Customize your intellectual property strategy and need to protect your business needs. An intelligent idea is important for business development.
5. Innovative smart product development can link marketing and investment capital.
6. Idee, lahenduse läbimõtlemise käigus arvesta detaile, need määravad toote edukuse - ainulaadsus, kasulikkus, funktsionaalsus, kaubanduslik mõte.
7. The use of a designer only at the end of the product development process does not lead to success, collaboration between the designer and the engineer is successful.
8. Check if the features of the new idea match the features of the patent or utility model.
9. Search for solutions similar to databases that are already protected or for which applications have been submitted.
10. Keep track of product development and competition in your market niche. Make background studies and ask for an application form to be solicited by an expert at the Patent Office.
11. Find out how to get benefits (EAS).

Proposal justification: This is the first project of the kind in the Baltic States where wall elements to be assembled of graphic concrete have been produced based on sample photographs.

Perpetuating pictures of the ROAD of the Estonian Road Museum on graphic concrete

Perpetuating photographs on facade surfaces in the graphic concrete technique is perhaps one of the most complicated methods of finishing in the industry of prefabricated concrete products. Good results require close co-operation between the architect and the manufacturer.

In order to achieve excellent results in producing graphic concrete, it is important to create a contrast between the cement stone of concrete and the hue of infillings. As graphic concrete is rather monochromatic and lacks of intermediate hues or the so-called “grey-hues”, this sets certain conditions for the choice of photographs. Often, suitable photographs also need pre-treatment before they can be used.

This, in turn, sets higher requirements for concrete technologists, who have to compose a suitable concrete recipe. The aim is to achieve as precise a realisation of the architect’s vision as possible.

The production of graphic concrete pictures also requires real mastery from plant workers. Panels, of which each is a small shred of a bigger picture, are like puzzle pieces forming a whole. The whole facade must be even and the continuation of the picture from one panel to another must be accurate and smooth. This sets higher requirements for production and construction tolerances. The work requires utmost precision and cognition of the whole.

In addition, the timely and masterly washing of the panels is very important. Washing off unhardened concrete particles from the panel surface is what generates the picture. Excessive or too little washing can significantly affect the quality of the picture. It is not possible to provide specific guidelines and the washers themselves have to perceive what is “correct”, thereby directly participating in the creation of the graphic concrete picture.

Achieving the best result requires full understanding between the architect, the customer and the producer, as well as time and the preparation of several model examples.

A new handbook “BÜ4 Betooni pinnad” (BÜ4: Concrete Surfaces) was published as a co-project of the Concrete Association of Estonia and ET INFOkeskus.

The book is based on the translation of the Finnish “BY40 Betonipinnat” into Estonian. However, the BÜ4 handbook is more than just the translation of BY40 from Finnish to Estonian. References to Finnish standards have been substituted with references to European and Estonian standards where possible. Likewise, local conditions and linguistic peculiarities have been taken into consideration. As such, “BÜ4 Betooni pinnad” is one of the first publications in Estonian thoroughly introducing the characteristics and usage of concrete surfaces and giving clear guidelines on their classification and quality assessment. Some objects in Estonia have also been added to the abundant photo material.

Eestikeelse väljaande valmimisse on andnud oma panuse Eesti betooniala tunnustatud eksperdid Mart Arro, Toomas Laur, Mati Laurson, Heiki Meos, Viktor Mõisja, Riho Oras, Kaspar Parkja, Kalev Ramjalg, Enno Rebane ja Tanel Tuisk.
